Gauguin is a developing proposal to the Commission of the European Union Framework 5 Improving the Human Research Potential and the Socioeconomic Knowledge Base programme under the Research Training Networks specific action. The project aims to improve the usability of information retrieval systems through improved assessment and evaluation methods. The Mira working group has made a strong start on this work and Gauguin will continue the work of Mira through cross-EU collaboration. In particular, Gauguin will support the movement of young researchers throughout Europe in order to meet its goals.

The project is tentatively named after Paul Gauguin a post-impressionist artist who was heavy influenced by his travels and follows on the artist theme of IR projects from the early work of Miro.

The first proposal meeting was held in Glasgow on 22 March 1999 (1030-1600).
