Seeing speech in the brain
Speech can be processed by eye as well as by ear. Some cortical activation experiments will be described with reference to the following questions: to what extent is 'auditory speech cortex' activated by silent speechreading? Do all forms of face action deliver similar activation patterns? Do the 'oral deaf' show similar or different patterns to those of hearing people? What are the implications for understanding (a) audiovisual speech perception and (b) cortical implant work?
