Autism in Museums: an overview of past and future research

PhD candidate Aimee Fletcher will be talking about her project, The development of “autism friendly” events in cultural heritage institutions has increased in recent years, however there is a lack in research into the effectiveness of these provisions and whether they meet the needs of autistic visitors. This presentation gives an overview of past research developing autism accessible provisions for The Hunterian, Glasgow, in 2019. It shall explore the process and findings from the work, and explore how this has influenced the direction of the PhD research Aimee is currently undertaking. The PhD project, entitled “Autism in Museums: Co-Creation Strategies for Making Museums Autism-Accessible”, intends to further research the barriers to museum visiting by working directly with autistic adults to develop provisions and set out guidance for other institutions.
