Spinal circuits controlling itch and pain

Spinal glycinergic neurons act as a gate for pain and itch transmission. We identified a subset of glycinergic that have a specific function in controlling itch like behavior, potentially via regulating primary afferent input onto the gastrin releasing peptide (Grp) expressing subset of excitatory dorsal horn interneurons. We find that Grp expressing neurons are required for the full scale pruritic response and that activation of Grp neurons increases responses to pruritic stimuli as well as evokes itch like spontaneous behaviour.
