Spinal Cord Stimulation: History, Mechanisms and Evidence along with Reflections on Clinical Experience.

Spinal cord stimulation has been considered as a form of treatment for chronic pain since Melzack and Wall's Gate Control theory of Pain was published in the 1960's. Since then this form of treatment has evolved to become more mainstream, although the mechanisms are still not well understood. I will endeavor to give a flavour of the journey spinal cord stimulation has taken since its inception, with our current understanding of the evidence and reflect on my own clinical experience since I began treating patients about ten years ago.
