Tracking visual word form processing in the ventral visual stream

I will discuss some previous research using source-localised MEG+EEG data and Representational Similarity Analysis (RSA) to investigate the visual and orthographic processes supported by the ventral visual stream across time. We tested a set of RSA models reflecting two key stages: 1) low-level visual processing, based on pixel-level features; and 2) abstract letter processing, based on letter identity and letter position within the word (regardless of their position within the visual field). Using these models, we are able to dissociate between early visual and orthographic processing both spatially and temporally, and the results demonstrate that left occipitotemporal cortex plays a key role in letter and word recognition.
