How does facial expression affect face recognition?
Facial expression is a major source of image variation in face stimuli. A continuing challenge for the visual system is to recognise a new face in the presence of this variation. My talk will examine four issues surrounding this topic. The first is about how different facial expressions impact on identity recognition differently. The second is on the attempts to separate the effects of face-shape deformation from emotional processing. The third relates to improvement of expression-invariant recognition as a result of minimal exposure to expression variation, and the last is on the advantages and limitations of dynamic expression in achieving image-invariant face recognition. The relationship between expression invariance and image invariance will be discussed in the framework of face learning.
