Anatomical connectivity from diffusion MRI: Networks, plasticity and parcellation
Anatomical networks in the brain and the 3D course of brain fiber bundles can be reconstructed from diffusion MR images using tractography. With the example of the language network, this lecture illustrates, which functio-anatomical insights can be gained by a detailed reconstruction of this network. Besides tractography, diffusion MRI allows to estimate microstructural properties of the brain white matter fibers. These parameters reflect the maturation in the developing brain and plasticity in the adult brain. Finally the connectional fingerprint of each brain region can also be used to parcellate the cortex in function-anatomical homogeneous regions.
