Individual Differences in Non-Native Phoneme Perception

Previous research has uncovered a male advantage for processing non-native speech sounds. I will report on a study that tried to uncover whether this is due to to men performing better with temporal or with spectral contrasts. The findings show that there appears to be a sex difference in rapid temporal auditory processing. In addition, our findings show effects of musical ability and inhibitory control on other aspects of sound processing. These results suggest that individual differences in non-native speech-sound processing are to some extent determined by temporal auditory processing ability but rely also on a host of other abilities that are deployed flexibly depending on the characteristics of the target sounds.
