Biased Perception: How Language Influences What We See.
Cross-linguistic studies provide compelling demonstrations of how language shapes our conceptual knowledge. But what about our perceptual experience Does language bias the way we interpret what we perceive? Or is the influence even more direct, influencing sensory representations, perhaps through long-term associations between lexical and sensory systems? I will address this question by considering the influence of language in two domains, the perception of color and the perception of faces. The results point to surprising ways in which language may both facilitate and interfere with perception.
