Deep Brain Stimulation as a method of treating Schizophrenia
Hypofrontality: reduced blood flow and metabolism in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), is seen as an indicator of schizophrenia. We are proposing to combat hypofrontality through the deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subcortical-nuclei. To test this hypothesis recordings of activity in the pre-frontal cortex are required to measure the success of the DBS as a route to lower hypofrontality. The presentation shall cover the theory behind this hypothesis and the route taken to test it. This will include the equipment and computational techniques which have been developed during the course of my PhD which provide methods of wireless recording of EEG signals and automatic removal of stimulation artefacts.
