Level 3 courses and exams

by Steve Draper.

This page lists the level 3 course modules, including information on exams, which years Joint Honours students take them, codes, etc.

The big change this year (2012) is that these courses will now all be examined in a separate exam, mostly 1 hour long, (except for Professional Skills which is examined by coursework only). Thus for example single honours students will now have eight short exams, rather than four larger ones. We hope, but cannot guarantee, that no two exams will be on the same day. There may be exams on Saturdays, and may be exams in the evening e.g. at 18:30.

  • "Term" here means semester, and means before(1) or after(2) Christmas.
  • "Joint year" is the year in which Joint Honours students take the module.

    Notes

Exam places and times are officially announced through here: Exam dates.

The current format for these exams (apart from Statistics) is that you have an hour per course, in which you answer one question from a choice of four.

"Exam" has two meanings. Most staff and students use "exam" to mean an assessment occasion a few hours long in a specially arranged time and place. But a few use it as a synonym for "assessment" that includes coursework.

The word "paper" has at least 4 different meanings: perhaps it should never be used as you can never be sure what anyone else means by it.

  • E-papers, or exam papers or exam occasions: a single occasion in an exam hall; with a single question paper, from which a candidate will answer one or more questions. N.B. some students (e.g. in part 1 finals) will attend only part of such an occasion, answering only some of the questions/topics.
  • C-papers, or registered "courses". A course with a course code in the university catalogue. These "courses" range in scale from a single topic that is one third of a part 1 finals exam paper, to a whole year's course.
  • A-papers, or assessment papers. A unit for aggregating marks into a single "paper mark". Still important in some faculties.
  • Marc uses it to refer to an internal data object in his software. His paper (ID) numbers may have no relation to any meaning.

There is nothing to stop us having several E-papers contributing to a single A-paper, and also several A-papers taking marks from a single E-paper. In fact if we move further to having more aspects assessed by both coursework and exams, this will be quite likely to happen.
