Macs. Look for more stacks in Itlib:More HyperCard Stacks, especially the "Idea" stacks. When working, especially if you go on later in the IT course to HCI projects, you will want to keep your own stacks on your floppy disks. The sounds wont play if the volume is set to 0. Do: menu, Control Panels, Sound, Volumes and then set the slider to non-zero. On power macs, also check the mechanical volume control on the monitor below the screen. Error message Cant play sound ... You cant play sounds unless Hypercard has plenty of memory. [Quit Hypercard. Select the Hypercard icon itself; Open the info box (File menu, Info) Unlock it; put, say, 5000 in the box for memory size; close the info box.] Warnings Saving to disk: Hypercard is like Filemaker but unlike normal Mac applications: it does not have a save command but instantly saves all changes i.e. Hypercard changes not only the copy you are seeing but the disk copy of the current stack too, without you having to Save it. This means you do not have to remember to save BUT it also means you do not have a backup copy if you make a mess of the main copy. Therefore it is wise to make such a spare copy frequently (File:Save a Copy...). Even in reading a stack you may accidentally change it, although this is not a big problem on the lab machines where files are restored at every reboot. Disk space: When you start creating and modifying stacks, do not do it on a crowded floppy disk: If there is not enough space left on disk to add to the stack, HyperCard will not do what you ask but it does not warn you clearly: it may beep, or just say it hasn't carried out your last command (e.g. to create a new card). You will have to leave HyperCard and clear space on your disk. Facts about Hypercard versions Stacks are upwards compatible only: if you create them with an early version of Hypercard (version 1), you can transfer them to version 2 but NOT the other way round. New sounds (advanced tip) Use menu, Control Panels, Sound to record a new sound, naming it (say) "MySound" Use resedit (from MacLib) to copy the new sound resource from the System file to your Stack Then in a button script do "play MySound". See the stack "Play sounds" for examples.Using ready-made HyperCard systems Exploration Most exploration is just a matter of clicking on buttons, though the File:Open Stack... command can be useful. Facts There are four basic items: buttons, fields, cards, and stacks. Once in HyperCard, each screen shows the current card. Cards are organised into sets called stacks, each stored as a separate file on the Mac. On each card there will be text, pictures, and buttons. Clicking a button will do something, usually a jump to some other card. To move to another stack (e.g. Help) within hypercard: use Open Stack on the File menu. To return to a stack, try the Recent command on the Go menu. Stuck in a stack? Make the menubar appear.
