12:15pm: ADVANTAGES, LIMITATIONS AND CHALLENGES OF USING MIXED METHODS
There are varying viewpoint as to the reasons for and the strengths of combining methods (qualitative and quantitative) in research. This talk will address the advantages, limitations and challenges of using a mixed method approach to data collection within the context of student learning. Combining research methods is useful in some areas of research, such as student learning, because the complexity of phenomena requires data from varying viewpoints. It will be argued that, in some areas of study, we should view qualitative and quantitative methods as part of a continuum of research, rather than dichotomous opposites, with specific techniques selected based on the research objective.
